The UP Institute of Islamic Studies is proud and honored to host the public lecture of distinguished scholar, Dr. Imtiyaz Yusuf, who specializes in religion with a focus on Islam in Thailand and Southeast Asia and also Muslim-Buddhist dialogue. The lecture is entitled ‘Islam, Buddhism and Politics in Southeast Asia‘ and it was held on September 29, 2017 (Friday) from 1:00 to 5:00 PM at the Juinio Hall’s audio-visual room of UP National Engineering Center (NEC).
Dr. Imtiyaz Yusuf is the Director of the Center for Buddhist-Muslim Understanding in the College of Religious Studies at Mahidol University in Thailand. He holds the rank of Senior Fellow at the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding of Georgetown University, Washington D.C., USA. He has contributed to the Oxford Encyclopedia of Islamic World (2009), Oxford Dictionary of Islam (2003), Encyclopedia of Qur’an (2002), and Oxford Encyclopedia of Modern Islamic World (1995). Presently, he is the Southeast Asian Editor of the prestigious Oxford Islamic Studies Online.

Dr. Yusuf’s presentation, Islam, Buddhism and Politics in Southeast Asia, seeks to understand the place of Buddhism in our shared common religious history. It employs Wilfred Cantwell Smith’s reference to “unity among the religions,” i.e. humankind shares a singular religious history. This is done without imposing the finality of Muhammad’s prophetic position on the Buddhists, or imposing the Buddhahood of Siddhartha on the Muslims; for both positions are unacceptable at the institutionalized levels of Islam and Buddhism. The presentation is made of three parts: (1) History of Muslim-Buddhist Relations and Islam-Buddhism Parallels, (2) Islam in Southeast Asia – An Overview, and (3) Case studies of Islam-Buddhism relations and conflicts in contemporary Southeast Asia.
