10 UP-IIS Students Pass 2020 Special Bar Exam for Shari’a Courts

The Office of the Bar Confidant of the Supreme Court released the result of the 2020 Special Bar Examinations for Shari’a Courts on March 9, 2021confirming 71 passers out of the 653 examinees.

Ten (10) students of the University of the Philippines – Institute of Islamic Studies (UP-IIS) were among the 71 successful examinees who took the exams on January 19 and 26, 2020. These IIS students are as follows:

  1. Adan, Gurhan
  2. Badarol, Halil Unda
  3. Flores, Analiza
  4. Ibrahim, Amer
  5. Jainal, Farhana
  6. Malang, Alex
  7. Mangondaya, Mahid
  8. Musanif, Bahja Tarusan
  9. Saidamern, Ramayana
  10. Taha, Nornisah

Ramayana Saidamen placed second with a rating of 86.975% while Nornisah Taha garnered the tenth place with a rating of 80.950%.

The Special Bar Examinations for Shari’a Courts are administered by the Supreme Court of the Philippines every two years for purposes of qualifying for a position in the Shari’a courts and admission to special membership in the Philippine Bar.

Bar takers are required to undergo a 45-day seminar training to be conducted by the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) on Jurisprudence and Customary Laws; Persons, Family Relations and Property; Successions, Wills/Adjudication and Settlement of States; and Procedure in Shari’a Courts.

The Institute of Islamic Studies, in coordination with NCMF, conducted a Shari’a Training in 2019 at SURF building inside the University of the Philippines. Lecturers in the training include Atty. Mehol Sadain on Procedures; Dean Macrina Morados on Persons, Family Relations and Property; Ustadz Luqman bin Usman Imam on Jurisprudence and Customary Laws; and Johayra Datlan on Successions, Wills and Settlement of States.

UP IIS – UP CIDS Publications

The Institute of Islamic Studies is elated to share its publications on Islam and Muslims in the Philippines, made possible through the unwavering support of the UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies (UP CIDS) through its Islamic Studies Program (ISP). The Islamic Studies program is convened by the Dean, Assoc. Prof. Macrina A. Morados and is anchored on three research components: 1) HIKMA-Historical and Islamic Knowledge for the Modern Age; 2) The Shariah Courts; and, 3) The Moro Story. UP CIDS was established in 1985 by the late UP President Edgardo J. Angara, who envisioned the Center as the University’s policy research unit.
