UP-IIS Welcomes Ramadan 2021

The University of the Philippines Institute of Islamic Studies (UP-IIS) joins the Muslim Ummah worldwide in welcoming Ramadan 2021 that started Tuesday, the 13th Day of April following the sighting of the new moon.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and is the holy month of fasting, spiritual reflection and prayer for Muslims. This is also the month in which the Divine Revelation (Al Quran) was revealed to Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon him).

This is also considered to be the month of Blessings, Mercy and Redemption from Hellfire by the Muslims. It is the period when Muslims show their patience, piety and devotion through fasting, increase in Ibadah (worship) and Dua (supplications), doing good deeds to others, and helping the needy. Fasting (Sawm) is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is an obligatory duty of every able Muslims. It is observed from sunrise to sunset for the whole month in accordance with the Teachings of Prophet Mohammad.
