BARMM Member of the Parliament Sattar Visits IIS

Last September 4, 2019, IIS alumnus and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) member of the parliament Hon. Alzad Sattar visited the Institute. A short yet productive talk with the faculty members and university researchers commenced. During the discussion, Sattar expressed his intention of collaborating with the Institute in his advocacy for the Bangsamoro people. He believes in a research-oriented policy-making and that’s where IIS can come in. In his own words, he said, “Please help me with my new role in the parliament. I strongly believe that any policy must be founded on research.”

Sattar laid down the specific areas for collaboration. He started with Madrasah Education along with Islamic leadership, Islamic ethics, Islamic economics and finance, Islamic approach to peace and development, and Islamic way of appreciating technology. He also mentioned of reviving Al-Amanah Bank and to turn it into an official bank for BARMM.  Last but not the least; Sattar is also concerned with helping farmers and fishermen in the region through an agro-fisheries program.

Toward the end of the discussion, other concerns evolved such as investing on Islamic microfinance, continuing conflict resolution, countering violent extremism, highlighting intrafaith and interfaith dialogues, mainstreaming gender issues, creating a Bangsamoro State College, and creating an office under BARMM that caters to Muslims outside the region. Before the meeting ends, in his capacity as the new president of UP IIS Alumni Association, Sattar announced that the first UP Islamic Studies Alumni Association Homecoming Summit will be held in Cotabato City on October 26-27, 2019.

  1. I congratulate the UP leaders for establishing a forum for greater understanding of the Islamic faith in a predominantly Christian nation. Salam.
